Is Triathlon an Olympic Sport? Olympic VS Sprint & IRONMAN Triathlon

Triathlon became an Olympic sport in 2000. Triathlon made its first appearance as an Olympic sport at the Sydney Olympics. Out of 100 participants,48 were women and 52 were men. The sport is also known as Standard/Olympic Triathlon. The event occurs after every four years.

The first triathlon race happened in 1974 in San Diego. Eleven years earlier from becoming an Olympic sport, it received Olympic status. It made the triathlon a centerpiece for the viewers. The single event covering three sports was quite impressive. Triathlon was the only sport to receive this recognition before time.

In 1989, the International Olympic Committee decided to grant triathlon financial support. This was to increase the popularity and participation of this sport. Eventually, triathlon is now an international sport played in Olympics.

Undoubtedly, it is the best possible thing that could happen in the Olympics. The Olympic triathlons have given us some incredible moments since 2000 (source).

How does Olympic Triathlon differs from Ironman and sprint Triathlon?

They greatly differ. Ironman triathlon has the most challenging distances if compared to the Olympic triathlon.

The official distances for Iron Man are 3.8 km swim, 180.2 km bike, and 40.2 km run. If we talk about Half Iron Man Triathlon, the name suggests it covers half of the distances as mentioned earlier. It is also known as 70.3 Triathlon that covers 1.9 km swim,90 km bike, and 21.1 km run.

Another type that is considered the easiest and smallest of all is Sprint Triathlon. It is usually for premature triathletes and to keep one’s body warm. It includes the 70 m swim, 20 km bike, and 5 km run.
