There are two main reasons. One is to protect their arms when they fall, bump, or get pushed into these obstacles. The second reason is to be sheltered from the elements: rain, wind, and cold.
Runners wear long socks because they help shield their legs from the elements, especially during trail running, they also provide various benefits to running performance such as improved recovery, decreased soreness, and better blood circulation.
Cardio will not kill muscle. However, doing too much cardio and not enough strength training is a surefire way to decrease muscle mass. And cardio on its own will not lead to significant muscle gains without any added strength training.
Like running and swimming, cycling can be a way to burn more calories to assist in overall body composition. All three disciplines will still require some level of strength training to get noticeable abs. A solid strength training routine paired with your aerobic activity of choice can put the individual on the path to a lean physique.
Running can be very hard on your hips, but it isnโt all bad. In fact, one study published in the BMJ Exercise and Sport Medicine journal found no significant hip difference between the non-runners and highly active runners (though there were some minor abnormalities)
